Anaconda – Nicki Minaj

This song by Nicki Minaj is a very fun piece of work. I would like to start with the obvious which is how the video starts, as if she is in the jungle which reminds me of Jennifer Nash’s piece in which she mentions that “where white women are depicted in pornography as an ‘object’, black women are depicted as animals.” The first couple takes of this video take place in a jungle setting which sets the mood for a sort of pornographic depiction. They also displayed A LOT of the backward gaze, the song is all about it. And in this very video performance, it is a pornographic backwards gaze. Its the intention of the song, its a “look at my ass” kind of statement.
